In this article i will explain what is the Differences between Pillar and Column using the table chart. Before going into the list of the differences, we are going to discuss what are pillar & column is.?
1 – Pillar
Pillar is the vertical structure designed to bear the weight of the building’s roof & it can also be used as the decorative element in the structure. It can even stand on its own.
It is the constructed from the single piece of timber, concrete, steel, reinforcement concrete or masonry bricks. Typically, the pillar is not constructed for the resisting load bearing function. While, column is the structural member, that is used for transfer of the compressive load safely to foundation.
Pillar may be made from the natural rock. There are many examples of the rock pillars are chamber pillar, katskhi pillar, pompeys pillar & pillar rock. Pillars may be rounded, square, rectangle in the shape but most of pillars for architectural view are rounded.

Columns are used to support beam or arches where slab or ceilings are the rest. It can be constructed in many shapes such as the rectangular, square, circular, hexagonal, octagonal etc.
Column rises from the base & rest on the foundation. It is constructed of the masonry or steel. It is designed to resist the lateral forces and for the purpose of the wind or earthquakes. It might be used for the decorative purpose.
What is the Differences between Pillar and Column
The comparison between pillar & the column are shown in the table which is given below
S.No | Column | Pillar |
1 | Column is the structural member that transmits the load of the structure to the footing and the soil | Pillar is the vertical structure designed to bear the weight of the building’s roof |
2 | All columns are not pillar | All pillars are column |
3 | Column are used to support the load bearing wall | Pillars are used for the decorative purposes |
4 | It arises from the base and rest on the foundation | The structure that support bigger architectural structure. |
5 | Column are used to support the load of the beam, slab etc. | Pillar can be stand alone or support the roof of the building. |
6 | In column, Steel can be used | Steel is never used in pillars |
The main objective of this article What is the Differences between Pillar and Column is that the pillars are mostly used of the decoration and some times for bearing the load of the building roof. While, the columns is only used for bearing the load of the beam, & slab etc. in the building.
